  Task: Lubricants and lubrication

  Sub Task: Identification and uses of various types of lubricants used in engine room.

  Aims:

1.     Identification of various types of lubricants.

2.     What are uses of lubricants on board ship?

3.     What is the importance of lubrication?

 

Requirement for performing the task:

1.     Lubricating oil

2.     Grease

3.     Oil can

4.     High pressure grease gun

5.     Pneumatic grease gun

Precaution to be observed:

1.     Wear proper PPE

2.     When handling oil protective clothing must be worn.

3.     Put the barrier cream on skin. Because some of the oil affect skin.

4.     Refer lubricating chart provided by manufacturer.

5.     Never mix different grade of oil.

6.     Lubricating oil drum must be secured and lashed in chemical locker.

TYPES OF LUBERICANTS:

1.     Hydraulic lubrication for hydraulic machines

2.     General purpose Greases

3.     Main engine Crankcase oil

4.     Generator engine Crankcase oil

5.     Air compressor sump oil

6.     Oil for gear cases of various machinery

7.     Main engine Cylinder oil

 

USE OF LUBRICANTS:

1.     Use to reduce the friction between moving machinery parts.

2.     Reduce the heat.

3.     Prevent the corrosion.

4.     Increase the life of machine.

5.  Take the load of machine
